KUALA LUMPUR: The C4 anti-corruption activist group has urged US President Barack Obama to review his government’s strong support for the Prime Minister, Najib Razak, and to press Najib on human rights, corruption and 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
Obama is scheduled to meet Najib next week when the US president comes to Malaysia for the Asean summit meeting, which will discuss political and economic union in the Asean Community and trade issues such as the Trans-Pacific free trade agreement.
The US president is also expected to discuss regional security, counter-terrorism, and a proposed code of conduct for maritime passage and territorial disputes in the South China Sea
The group’s director, Cynthia Gabriel, said in a statement that Obama should not ignore Malaysia’s “dirty current state of affairs” but should press Najib to answer allegations raised against him and his government.
She said Malaysia had a dismal human rights record and accused the government of oppressing the freedoms of Malaysia. The authorities continued to stifle dissent and had clamped down on media that exposed corrupt practices and questioned the affairs of 1MDB.
Obama should raise the issue of officials of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission being arrested or transferred, in moves seen as interfering with the 1MDB investigation, she said.
He should also insist that Najib provide more transparency in government, the free trade agreements, and especially in the expenditure on mega-projects and government procurement.
“President Obama must be compelled to address these important concerns, and urge answers on such damaging allegations,” Gabriel said.
