PKR will file a civil suit to strike out the 13th general election results as null and void after The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) said funds from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) were used for election campaigning.
Its vice-president, Nurul Izzah Anwar, said the suit will be filed "as soon as possible", and would also follow a report to be lodged with the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) on the matter.
Nurul Izzah said the allegation of using such funds, implicating Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, questions the credibility of Najib, Barisan Nasional, and Umno's legitimacy to lead the country.
She added that under electoral laws, Barisan should have only spent close to RM100 million for elections at both parliamentary and state levels, but the allegations meant that the ruling coalition might have spent RM2.6 billion for campaigning.
The WSJ in recent weeks published two articles implicating 1MDB funds and also Najib.
The first was an article that alleged that 1MDB overpaid for a power plant bought from the Genting Group. Subsequently, Genting allegedly used part of the proceeds to make a RM35 million donation to a charity under Najib, Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia (YR1M).
YR1M then announced several charity projects which Najib brought up during his campaign in the 2013 general election.
A second WSJ report last week alleged that some US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) was transferred to Najib's personal accounts and involved companies linked to 1MDB. A sum of US$681 million out of this total had allegedly been transferred to his accounts in March, ahead of the elections in May that year.
Najib has denied taking money for personal gain, and is contemplating taking legal action against the WSJ.
"We are ready to contest in general elections if need be in case the elections are found to be null and void by the court," Nurul Izzah said. – July 8, 2015.
