Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan has dropped his RM50 million defamation suit against jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar’s lawyer Latheefa Koya (
) said Saiful’s lawyer Zamri Idrus informed the Kuala Lumpur High Court of their decision this morning.
The case management was scheduled to take place there in the chambers of Judicial Commissioner Azizul Azmi Adnan, who was supposed to hear the case next August.
The withdrawal means Saiful would no longer have any claims against Anwar, said Latheefa.
“We are happy because it further reaffirms Anwar’s innocence,” she told reporters.
The complainant gave no reason for the case’s withdrawal or any discussion on costs, she added.
Saiful claims he was ridiculed
Saiful, a former aide of Anwar's,
filed the suit
last August for allegedly being sodomised, and then for defamation over Anwar’s various public statements and media interviews.
“Anwar's statement had resulted in public scorn in the social media and various websites. I was also ridiculed by Anwar's supporters,” Saiful had said in his statement of claim.
Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after the government succeeded in overturning the initial 2012 acquittal for the sodomy charge.
Despite this, the former Permatang Pauh MP maintains that he is innocent.
