QUESTIONS FROM BARU BIAN:
6. To ask the Chief Minister and Minister for Resource Planning and Environment:
(a) What is the stand of the Sarawak Government on our participation in the Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS) licensing system under the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade, Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA) between Malaysia and the European Union? Is it true that Sarawak will not participate?
(b) If so, what are the reasons?
For the information of Ahli Yang Berhormat for Ba'Kelalan, Sarawak Government has agreed that the proposed Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade - Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-VPA) between Malaysia and the European Union (EU) would be implemented on a phased-approach (initially applicable only to Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah). It would only apply to Sarawak when Sarawak is convinced that the FLEGT VPA would benefit the local timber industry. Nonetheless, Sarawak has its own Logs Legality Verification System (LVS).
Sarawak is still currently involved in the negotiation with the European
Union together with Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah on the FLEGT-VPA.
7. To ask the Chief Minister and Minister for Resource Planning and Environment:
To provide a list of illegal logging cases investigated by Sarawak Forestry from 2010 to 2013 detailing type of offence committed, parties investigated and charged, action taken against parties and current status of the cases.
