Identity Theft used to set up company with SSM

PRESS STATEMENT 27 AUGUST 2014

Recently, I was approached by a friend who wishes to be only known as Mr. Wong whose his name and his identity card number (IC No.) have been used without his knowledge to set up three companies namely:-

1)         Success Gourmet Solution,
2)         Mainland Nice Resources, and
3)         Jack Connect Enterprise

All these three companies were in fact registered in Kuala Lumpur through Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM) (in English, known as Companies Commission of Malaysia) on the 17th of July 2013.

This matter only came to Mr. Wong’s knowledge when he received a call from Telekom Malaysia (“Telekom”) on the 25th of July 2014 to request him to pay three outstanding Telekom bills which are in the total of RM9,098.75 owing by the three companies. It was only then that Mr. Wong realised that someone had stolen his identity to register the three companies and used the three companies to register internet lines with Telekom. All these happened without Mr. Wong even knowing it at all.

Mr. Wong has to-date already filed a report with SSM and Telekom and we have been informed by SSM and Telekom that the matter is currently pending investigation.

A report has also been lodged with the Police Station at Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur but the response from the Police officers to Mr. Wong was that the police will not do any further investigation because there was no damage suffered by Mr. Wong. Such a response is indeed very appalling especially when Mr. Wong is a victim of identity theft. Furthermore, this kind of identity theft could have happened to any of us without us knowing. We will follow up this matter with the police and will write to the police for their explanation whether they will pursue to investigate the matter.

We also call forth the members of the public to be vigilant when giving out their identity card when registering for any services, always remember to cross out the photocopy of your identity card to state what exactly the purpose is because it could be easily used by crooks to commit crimes using the stolen identity.

Should the members of the public come across the abovenamed companies, please immediately lodge a police report and have no further dealings with the companies.

We also urge SSM, Telekom Malaysia and all other companies to do a proper check before signing up anyone for any services. Companies should not be allowed to sign up any person without the presence of the identity card holder.

In the case of Mr. Wong who is a young man who is just started his career, it is definitely a big blow to him because this incident could affect him in the future.
