Anwar files appeal notice to set aside conviction
Lawyers representing Anwar Ibrahim have filed a notice of appeal to the Federal Court to set aside his Sodomy II conviction.
Anwar’s lawyer Ram Karpal said he has filed the notice at the Court of Appeal, and a copy was served at the Federal Court.
“We are now doing the administrative process of posting bail. Anwar’s bail will be posted by Ibrahim Yaacob,” he said.
“We have however, filed the notice of appeal.”
The Court of Appeal had on Friday overturned the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision and found Anwar guilty of sodomy.
It had also sentenced the opposition leader to five years’ jail.
The Court of Appeal, in granting a stay of execution of the sentence, had ordered that bail be posted before 11am today.
Anwar was convicted of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, at the Desa Damansara condominium between 3.15pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008.
The opposition leader and Permatang Pauh MP is expected to come at the Court of Appeal to sign the bail bond at around 1pm.
Bail is posted by Ibrahim, who is his former chief of staff and previously a candidate for the Setiawangsa parliamentary seat.
