KUCHING: The state police have formed a taskforce to investigate in detail the complaints of those involved in the Melikin case.

Deputy state police commissioner Datuk Law Hong Soon said the taskforce is headed by state Criminal Investigation Department head Datuk Pahlawan Zulkifli Hassan.

“We received many complaints from the public on the (Melikin) case, especially in Serian.

“We assure you that we will investigate the case thoroughly,” he told a press conference after launching the state-level Crime Awareness Day yesterday.

Law was commenting on the progress of the investigation into the Melikin case, where villagers have claimed they were intimidated and assaulted by gangsters.

However, he declined to elaborate further regarding the case as it is still under investigation.

He said the investigation requires cooperation from other government agencies as it involved aspects such as land, logging and environment.

“We will request for cooperation from other agencies to get the correct information regarding the case because it also involves licensing so it involves a lot of technicalities,” he explained.

On complaints that police reports were lodged but no action was taken, Law said all the complaints were investigated but might have been misconstrued.

“Opinions can be different but we will investigate and look into the case again to see that the investigation is done properly.”
