SWP must convince the people first, says Ba’Kelalan rep

KUCHING: The SWP is always welcomed to join Pakatan Rakyat if they are sincere and can convince supporters that they support Pakatan’s principles and are against Barisan Nasional.
“We are always open to any party, not only SWP, but also parties that might be formed or registered before the coming state elections, that share our principles,” said state PKR chairman and Ba’Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian.
“They (SWP) really need to convince the people that they are really a reformed party. That is our stand as of now. When the time comes for them to join, then we will have to look at it from that perspective,” he told reporters during a press conference at PKR headquarters here yesterday.
Baru said convincing the people was the most important element especially in elections because it would be the people who would be voting for the party.
He said SWP leaders who had previously announced that they were Barisan-friendly must overcome that obstacle first and show their sincerity with actions rather than statements.
“We will be meeting this Saturday. We will throw this idea to the leaders from various branches and they would bring it down to their grassroots. Other than that, there will be the GE13 post-mortem,” said Baru.
He said so far Pakatan central leadership in Kuala Lumpur had not received any application from SWP. Pakatan component DAP has sort of open its arms to SWP.
Late last month SWP president Larry Sng, in a press conference, did not deny the possibility of his party joining Pakatan. SWP will be holding its annual general meeting in a couple of months where it will likely to decide on its Pakatan overture.
