KUCHING: The allegations of rape against Penan girls and women that sparked an outcry in 2008 have remained unresolved and are upsetting certain quarters.
PKR Women’s Wing national vice-chief Voon Shiak Ni said after numerous recommendations and measures forwarded by the Women Ministry in the National Taskforce report, things had gone silent since.
“What ground work needed to be done has been done and what documentary evidence necessary to prove the occurrence of the crime has been documented. What is left is for the Government to act on it. But to date, no one has been called for investigation,” she said here yesterday.
She said it had been a long-standing issue and the people had yet to know how much the Government had uncovered.
Voon said she and the others had personally served a memorandum to Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Umno Wanita chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, but till now, they were still waiting for a positive move on the recommendations.
She said since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was presently in the state on a visit, she hoped the premier could shed some light on this issue given that he has taken over as Minister of Women, Family and Community Development.
She said she wanted Najib to give an update on the efforts taken to address the allegations, adding that by acting on this and punishing the perpetrators, it would send a stern message to deter rape and abuse of women and girls everywhere.
