Key Highlights of Amendments to Malaysian Election Regulations
This is a presentation done by Malaysian political scientist Dr Ong Kian Ming relating to the amendments passed last week in the lower house of the Malaysian parliament. The amendments will become law once it passes the Senate next week and gains royal assent before the end of May 2012.
These amendments will be in force during the upcoming general election. In a nutshell, the amendments will reduce room for third party and interested party oversight over the physical process of the polling. Note also that the Malaysian government has not allowed foreign or domestic observers during the election. As things stand, current Malaysian laws prevent any legal challenge to the electoral roll. We can expect elections to take place sometime this June or early July at the latest.
