Krian state rep and 18 others detained in S'wak

Sarawak police detained 19 people, including the state assemblyperson for Krian, Ali Biju from PKR, in Miri and Bintulu today under the Societies Act 1966.

Sarawak police commissioner Mohmad Salleh said a man was detained in Miri at noon for wearing a yellow T-shirt with the word 'Bersih' printed on it.

NONEHe said that in Bintulu, 18 people including Ali (left) and the Bintulu PKR branch head, Paul Raja, were detained for investigation under Section 47 of the Societies Act 1966, at a coffee shop in the Parkcity commercial area at 2.15pm today.

"Statements were taken from all those who were detained. Seventeen of them were later released on police bail while the other two are still being detained.

"The other two were detained for wearing the T-shirts with the word 'Bersih' printed," he told Bernama when contacted in Miri today.

Among those released was Ali.

Meanwhile in Kuching, the situation was peaceful although there were about 30 DAP supporters and 12 assemblypersons, who were wearing yellow T-shirts, who had gathered for breakfast at a coffee shop at the Stutong Commercial Centre since 8.30am.

An hour later, the 12 assemblypersons were divided into four groups to register voters at the BDC commercial centre, King Centre, Tabuan Jaya and Stutong.

Kuching district police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong said no undesired incidents were reported around the city.
